Four gifts holiday gift guide : READ

12.04.2015

Hello! It’s the final week of the 4 Gifts blogging series—which I guess means that Christmas is creeping up on us. Eeep! This week’s category is something to read. I am a HUGE reader and have always been. I devour at least one book a week. My family members, well, not so much. But I try and get creative when it comes to books. Magazine subs/renewals make great gifts, as do music books, if you are giving gifts to anyone who enjoys playing instruments. Got a vacation coming up? An information filled book on the destination helps get the kids excited and gives them some activity ideas. My daughter may grumble when it comes to getting her to read a non-assigned book, but I can always get her to read any sort of fun-fact type of book. And my husband? Well if I can get him to crack open a book on a vacation, its always, without fail, non-fiction.

With that in mind, here’s some great suggestions:
FOR HER

reads for her
Milwaukee Mayhem | The Martian | After You | Mindless Eating | Milwaukee Mag sub
FOR HIM

reads for him
Compelling People | Whisky Mag sub | Talk Like TED | To Sell is Human
FOR THE TWEEN/TEENAGE KIDS

kids books 2
Guinness World Record Gamers Edition | Grace, Gold, & Glory The Daring Book for Girls | Fodor’s Cancun guide

kid reads
Boy’s Life magazine sub | Rolling Stone rock songs for guitar | Ripley’s Believe it or Not | Guinness Book of World Records 2016

Don’t forget – you have until Sunday evening to enter to win all these awesome gifts!!

tips for getting those holiday cards done

12.02.2015

One of my favorite parts of the holidays season is sending and receiving holiday cards. Sure, its a busy time of the year and true, many of us keep up with each other one way or another in this digital age, but there’s something to be said about good old fashioned mail. The feeling you get when you open your mailbox to find it stuffed with cards. I love displaying the cards and then later, taking snaps of them and using them in my digital address book.

One of my least favorite parts of holiday cards is photos. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Here’s some simple tips to get those cards done and out the door.

1) Choose your photo type – did you already have a professional family photo done this year? Great – save yourself some time and stress and use it. If not, try not to worry too much about perfection and just take some cute snaps of those important people in your life. Kids don’t have coordinating clothes? No worries – change the photo to black and white. Or maybe do a selection of candids – this is what we did last year, with some Disney World photos. This year, even though I took family photos for a friend, the holidays snuck up on me and I was left with no time to take photos of my own (my kids schedules are INSANE). No sweat – I refuse to stress over it. I scrounged up a cute photo from one of our vacations this year and used that.

2) Buy your stamps online or in bulk at a place like Costco. Save yourself time by not having to hit the USPS this time of year and the pain of running out of stamps.

3) Update your address list

4) Update your card list. When in doubt, always send one.

5) And the fun part…time to select and order those cards!! Last year, I ordered our postcard style cards from Pear Tree and was so happy with the process and the quality that I decided to use them again. This year, they have two new additions to their holiday line: their premium cards and the Genevieve Gorder Holiday Collection. It was a hard choice to decide which design to go with!

During the ordering process, you can order envelopes that have your return address printed on them. You can also order extra envelopes, as well as other options. The cards come nicely packaged and quickly.

Right now through 12/15, they have their Jingle Sale, which saved me $20! They also have extended their Cyber Monday sale through the week with the code CYBER30 for 30% off. I encourage you to check them out…I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

Four Gifts Holiday Gift Guide : WEAR

11.30.2015

We’ve entered week four of the four gifts series. This week, we are talking about “Something to Wear”. Years ago, this started out as a category that my kids frowned upon. But now that they are tweens and teens, they actually get excited about clothing items and add them to their list. Especially my daughter.

Not sure what this is all about?
For us, its a way to simplify gift giving and to keep it more intentional. And our family truly sticks to it…each person gets one gift in each category, with the want gift being from Santa.
There are are around 10 bloggers or so participating this year’s series and we’ve got lists to cover all ages, stages, and likes. Hopefully our lists can help take some of the guesswork out of your holiday shopping!

Fifteen.

10.06.2015

I met Chris the summer we graduated from college. I am certain he does not remember it, but It was August 1996 and we were at a house party. I recall pointing to this guy who was completely and totally obnoxious and asking my friend Lisa, “who *IS* that dude?” She answered me with, “oh, that’s Tait. You’ve never met him?” So this was the infamous Tait I had heard of over the years. The one whom my roommates invited to our parties, but never came because he had a girlfriend (or something like that). And probably because we were younger folk.

Over the next year, I saw him more frequently, as I started hanging out with his crowd more often. Yet I still viewed him as this insanely obnoxious dude. As the months wore on, I began to enjoy his company more and more. I realized what a nice guy he was and that he brought out the fun, adventurous side in me.

One weekend in spring, a friend and I went to Madison for the weekend to visit Chris. On the drive home, he lamented to me that Chris would be excellent boyfriend material and I wholeheartedly agreed, secretly wishing he was my boyfriend material.

I think back to those days…how fun and carefree dating was. But also how volatile our relationship was. Oh my, how we’ve grown up and how we’ve grown. I was 25 when we bought a house and moved in together. I remember being hit with the thought of, “Oh crap. Now what happens when I’m mad? I have no where to go!”
image

I think back to when all 3 kids were young and we were struggling to find our ground and lost sight of us (I shared about that here). And I look at us now. It still isn’t easy. We still have our moments. And we still have to work hard. But fifteen years? That’s something. And its something worth putting work into.

Cheers to fifteen, babe. Here’s to fifty more.
